One of the more interesting design elements on the exterior of this traditional Whistler ski retreat is the curved beams that help support the king posts and ridge beams. These were made by slicing up solid timbers, numbering each piece, planing them, then gluing them back together in the curve. Even the knots line up to provide a convincing curved beam that looks like it grew that way in the forest. Alec Stuart wanted a stairwell that let light travel down the central space. The final design is "stringerless" with the treads hanging off the railing while the steel support is concealed in the newel posts and grip rails.
